Spotting the signs of an injured swan

Swans are strong, resilient birds, but when they become injured or unwell they are often unable to cope without help. Sadly, many cases go unreported because people assume the bird is fine or simply resting. Knowing what to look out for can make the difference between life and death.

Common signs of injury or illness

  • Unusual wing positions: A drooping wing, held out from the body, or one wing lower than the other can mean a break, dislocation, or entanglement.
  • Visible wounds or fishing tackle: Hooks, lines, or bands around the bill, neck, or legs are a major danger and need urgent attention.
  • Difficulty walking or limping: Swans will sometimes rest a leg on their back, which is normal, but constant limping or dragging a leg signals a problem.
  • Struggling to swim or fly: Moving lopsided, swimming in circles, or being unable to take off can all be signs of injury.
  • Spending too much time on land: While swans do rest ashore, one sitting alone for long periods away from the water may be in distress.
  • Unusual behaviour: Lethargy, isolating from the flock, or being unusually approachable by people are often signs something is wrong.

How MK Swan Rescue helps

Our team is trained to catch, assess, and treat injured swans safely. Some need detackling from fishing gear, others require veterinary care for broken wings or infected wounds. Every case is different, but with quick reporting we can usually give the bird the best possible chance of survival.

What you should do

If you see a swan showing any of these signs:

  • Do not attempt to catch or treat it yourself. Swans are powerful birds and handling without training can cause further harm.
  • Keep dogs and people away to reduce stress and avoid additional injury.
  • Give us the exact location. A Google Maps drop pin or what3words reference is ideal.
  • Send photos or video of the swan. These can be shared with any team member via WhatsApp to help us assess the situation before we arrive.
  • If you can, please stay with the bird in case it moves away or we need help finding the exact location.
  • Call MK Swan Rescue straight away with the details.

The sooner we know, the sooner we can help.
