Welcome to MK Swan Rescue: Where Compassion Meets Action

MK Swan Rescue is more than just a rescue organisation – we are a dedicated team of rescuers, volunteers, and advocates working tirelessly to protect and care for swans and waterfowl across Milton Keynes. Our journey began with a shared passion for the well-being of these majestic birds, and today, our mission is centred on education, prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, and advocacy.

Through swift rescue operations, public awareness campaigns, and collaborative efforts with local authorities, we strive to minimise the risks swans face and ensure a safer environment for them to thrive. But our story didn’t start here – it began with a few dedicated individuals who laid the foundation for what MK Swan Rescue has become today.

The History of MK Swan Rescue

The origins of MK Swan Rescue can be traced back to the efforts of Bryan Lea, one of the first dedicated waterbird rescuers in the Milton Keynes area. Bryan began his work assisting Ark Wildlife Rescue, which was run for many years by Margaret Burke. When Margaret was no longer able to continue, Bryan carried on under the Ark name, ensuring that swans and other waterbirds in distress still had someone to turn to.

For many years, Bryan was assisted by Helen Shield, and together they dedicated countless hours to rescuing swans and waterfowl. Their passion for waterbird welfare led them to volunteer with other swan rescue charities, where they gained additional experience in swan care and rehabilitation. Their efforts played a crucial role in shaping the local wildlife rescue scene, and eventually, they became part of the team that formed MK Swan Rescue.

During this time, Allie was also working independently, quietly responding to calls for help whenever needed. For over a decade, she operated alone, with occasional assistance from friends. Then, during one particular rescue, someone asked her who she was with. Without hesitation, she spontaneously coined the name MK Swan Rescue – a name that is now widely recognised and respected.

As the team grew in size and workload, so did the need to step things up and formalise the rescue. In May 2024, MK Swan Rescue CIC was incorporated with Companies House, officially becoming a nonprofit organisation. This step allowed the organisation to operate more efficiently, ensuring full insurance coverage and proper equipment for waterfowl rescues. The team also carries out risk assessments as needed, reinforcing their commitment to safety and professional rescue operations.

As the demand for swan rescue services in Milton Keynes increased, so did the organisation’s reach. Over the years, MK Swan Rescue became the contracted waterbird rescue service for The Parks Trust and Milton Keynes City Council, highlighting the vital role it plays in protecting the area’s wildlife. The team’s work has been featured in local news numerous times, such as in September 2024, when they faced a particularly demanding weekend of rescues, responding to multiple cases of territorial disputes, bird collisions, and fishing tackle injuries in just two days.

Today, MK Swan Rescue consists of a mix of fully trained rescuers, trainees, and a network of other volunteers. While Bryan and Helen have now retired from active rescue work, Helen still steps in when she can. Our team also includes fundraising volunteers, an admin assistant, and local supporters who help investigate reports of injured or distressed birds. Even those who cannot physically take part in rescues play an essential role by assessing situations and determining whether a full rescue response is required.

Thanks to the dedication of both past and present volunteers, MK Swan Rescue has become a lifeline for swans and waterfowl across Milton Keynes.

A Proactive Approach to Swan Welfare

At MK Swan Rescue, we believe that prevention is just as important as rescue and rehabilitation. Our proactive approach aims to minimise injuries, educate the public, and promote safer environments for swans.

Education and Awareness

Community involvement is at the heart of our work. Through public feeding events and welfare checks, we engage directly with the public, answering questions and offering advice on swan care. Our online campaigns and media outreach spread awareness about the dangers of littering, feeding swans inappropriate food, and other harmful behaviours. By sharing knowledge, we empower the community to take an active role in protecting their local swans.

Safeguarding

Hazard Identification: We conduct surveys of local waterways to identify and remove potential dangers such as discarded fishing lines, hooks, and other debris that can cause severe injuries to swans.

Safe Feeding Practices: Educating the public about what is safe and nutritious for swans is a key part of our prevention strategy. Many well-meaning people unknowingly feed swans harmful food, and we are always happy to advise on best feeding practices.

Collaboration with Authorities: We work closely with local councils, wildlife organisations, and environmental agencies to ensure that swan habitats are protected and maintained. This collaboration allows for swift action when potential threats arise.

Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Long-Term Support

Despite our best efforts to prevent injuries, swans still face dangers, whether from territorial disputes, fishing-related injuries, or environmental hazards. Our highly trained rescue team is always on call to respond quickly and ensure that injured swans receive the care they need.

Our Processes

Rescue Operations: Our team is equipped to handle a variety of emergency situations, from retrieving injured swans to assisting those trapped in hazardous conditions.

Rehabilitation Centres: We work with trusted rehabilitation facilities where swans receive expert veterinary care, allowing them to recover before being released back into the wild.

Post-Release Monitoring: Our support doesn’t end once a swan is released. We continue to monitor their health and well-being to ensure a successful return to their natural habitat.

Advocacy and Policy: Protecting Swans for the Future

Beyond direct rescue and rehabilitation, MK Swan Rescue is committed to advocating for stronger wildlife protection policies. We actively work to influence legislation at local, regional, and national levels to ensure better protections for swans and waterfowl.

By raising awareness, pushing for environmental improvements, and holding those responsible for harm accountable, we aim to create lasting change that benefits not just swans, but the entire ecosystem.
